Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley was a Vermont farmer and self-taught scientist who became famous in the late 1800s for being the first person to photograph individual snowflakes.

Using a bellows camera attached to a microscope, he captured more than 5,000 snow crystal images and helped reveal the incredible variety and complexity of their shapes.

His work popularized the myth that no two snowflakes are alike, earning him the nickname “Snowflake Bentley” and securing his legacy as a pioneer of atmospheric photography.
